The smart box for logistics

Behind the solution developed at the Fraunhofer IML is a 5G-compatibe sensor box that ensures uncomplicated enabling with Artificial Intelligence (AI) and modularly expandable capabilities on various robotic systems. With the help of innovative algorithms for localization, robots are enabled to traverse highly dynamical environments such as hospitals and to take on a variety of tasks like the transport of medical products.

The interface to the AGV (Automated Guided Vehicle) only requires minor software adjustments, which can be implemented swiftly and uncomplicated. This has the advantage that existing vehicle fleets can be quickly converted.

Through the display or smart glasses, users can intuitively interact with the technology and perform tasks such as remote maintenance.

Shape the future of logistics with humans and technology

The human-technology symbiosis is also at the forefront of this developed solution. Users can interact with the technology directly via the built-in QLED display (with touch) or smart glasses. For example, an expert can easily and quickly perform remote maintenance on the vehicle using the integrated remote assistance. Picking and putting personnel can also be guided during item retrieval or entry (even via speaker). Because of the prototype's high modularity, various application scenarios, including those with high demands on human-technology interaction, can be realized.

Reliable realtime communication

The transmission of large amounts of data in future-relevant automated intralogistics processes must always be fast and secure. AMR operations also necessitate dependable real-time communication. Furthermore, it is critical to enable error correction for AMRs, which requires localization and remote maintenance. Fraunhofer IML believes that the 5G standard is the best solution to all of these problems. Above all, 5G is a low-cost, time-saving concept. The network standard enables real-time data transmission between different system components, such as sensor technology and remote assistance, to be fast and secure.
