Projects

The Fraunhofer Institute for Material Flow and Logistics IML is considered the leading authority in holistic logistics research and works in all fields of internal and external logistics.

In line with the Fraunhofer concept, it develops solutions that can be used immediately by companies, while also conducting preliminary research with a time horizon of two to five years, or longer in individual cases. Founded in 1981, the institute currently employs around 450 scientific staff as well as administrative and workshop staff, supported by numerous student and scientific assistants.

As an outdoor AGV, O³dyn represents a new class of autonomous transport robots in logistics. The system combines high performance, dynamics, and flexibility in a hybrid vehicle for indoor and outdoor use. It transports pallet loads omnidirectionally at speeds of up to 36 km/h and leaves the protected environment of warehouses to operate autonomously on company premises. Simulation-based artificial intelligence forms a digital continuum that supports the vehicle’s development, testing, and safety.

The project to develop the ITCPRO level sensor demonstrates how event-based level measurement improves waste management logistics and the circular economy both ecologically and economically. The low-cost level sensor operates with ultra-low power, measures the fill level of sealed safety and recycling containers, and transmits data to backend systems via NB-IoT. Smart contracts generate tamper-proof records and enable automated billing. This page is aimed at managers who want to manage logistics processes using data and demonstrate environmental and economic benefits.
