DE4L - Intelligent use of data for greater efficiency in logistics

DE4L - Data-driven innovation for the logistics industry

The Data Economy 4 Advanced Logistics (DE4L) project aimed to equip courier, express and parcel service providers (CEP service providers) with sensors to collect valuable real-time data. This included information on environmental impact, noise levels, vibrations, GPS positions and precise delivery instructions. The collected data was made available on a shared, secure platform and could be used by logistics partners.

Why was DE4L relevant?

Until now, the collection of spatial and qualitative data was associated with high costs or inaccurate measurement methods. DE4L has created a new data economy that offers logistics companies considerable advantages:

  • Optimization of delivery processes through more precise data
  • Digitization and quality control through uniform standards
  • Cost reduction through reduced incorrect deliveries and more efficient route planning

In times of increasing order volumes and returns, DE4L offered the potential to significantly reduce costs for incorrect deliveries, traffic congestion and warehousing.

Expansion with a driver app

In addition to the sensor platform, an accompanying app was developed for courier drivers. This made it possible to add additional information to the platform, such as parking regulations or special delivery instructions (e.g. "Delivery only at Gate 3 from 8:00 to 10:00"). This enabled even more precise control of the delivery processes.

Technical implementation & collaboration

The project was implemented by a strong consortium:

  • Institute for Applied Computer Science
  • ScaDS Competence Center for Scalable Data Service and Solutions at Leipzig University
  • UNISERV GmbH
  • fox-COURIER GmbH Leipzig

These partners ensured the practical development and implementation of the platform with the highest security standards.
