Lamarr Institute - Research for Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence

The Lamarr Institute for Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence succeeded the Competence Center Machine Learning Rhine-Ruhr (ML2R). With long-term funding from the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), the institute is dedicated to the sustainable research of ML and AI technologies that are characterized by low resource consumption, high performance and trustworthy handling of data.

Research focus and developments

The institute focused on:

  • Use of AI and ML technologies on restricted systems
  • Further development of the open source development MLCVZoo for future ML and AI technologies
  • Simplified transfer of research results into application with partners from the logistics sector

Project coordination and implementation

Within the Lamarr Institute, work was carried out on practical solutions, including

  • Adaptation and optimization of ML algorithms for resource-saving calculations
  • Extension of existing open source frameworks for broader usability in the industry
  • Transfer and integration of the technologies into real logistics applications

Results and added value

The research work made it possible to:

  • Efficient ML and AI models are developed for limited hardware
  • Promote the use of open source technologies in the industry
  • Innovations for the use of AI in the logistics industry to be accelerated
