ML2R - Advanced machine learning for the economy
The Competence Center Machine Learning Rhine-Ruhr (ML2R) was one of six nationwide centers for the promotion of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML). The aim was to raise the development of ML technologies to a world-leading level and strengthen it through cutting-edge research, the promotion of young scientists and technology transfer.
Technological focus and innovations
ML2R researched resource-saving machine learning in order to make ML methods executable on restricted systems. Particularly relevant were:
- Hybrid ML models that are both data-driven and knowledge-based.
- Edge AI to enable ML algorithms on energy-efficient devices.
- Quantum and high-performance computing for the optimization of complex ML processes.
- Trusted AI that provides explainable and secure ML solutions for critical applications.
Transfer to the industry
A central goal was the transfer of practice and knowledge to industry. Companies were supported through demonstrators, workshops and close cooperation to successfully integrate ML technologies into applications. ML solutions for Industry 4.0, logistics, cognitive process automation and multimedia analysis were developed across all sectors.
Interdisciplinary cooperation
ML2R combined the expertise of leading research institutions:
- Dortmund University of Technology - Research on data-driven ML models
- Fraunhofer IML - Application of ML in logistics
- Fraunhofer IAIS - Development of intelligent analysis and information systems
- University of Bonn - Algorithmic foundations and applied AI
This close integration of basic and application-oriented research was the basis for practical innovations.
Long-term prospects
Following successful evaluation, ML2R was transferred to the Lamarr Institute for Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence. Here, the ML technologies developed are being further researched and scaled up for industrial applications.
