Interdisciplinary teams made up of logistics professionals and applied research scientists focus on digitalization, artificial intelligence, and robotics for the supply chain.
Global logistics provider Dachser has extended its research partnership with the Fraunhofer Institute for Material Flow and Logistics IML in Dortmund and the Fraunhofer Institute for Intelligent Analysis and Information Systems IAIS in St. Augustin through the end of 2029.
“The DACHSER Enterprise Lab, which marries scientific research with practical application, has proven its worth. Over the next three years, we will be focusing on digital solutions, artificial intelligence, and robotics,” explains Stefan Hohm, Chief Development Officer at Dachser.
Dachser CEO Burkhard Eling puts this extension of the partnership in its context: “Our research collaboration with the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft is a key element in our innovation strategy. Again and again, it has proven its effectiveness and its relevance to our business when it comes to harnessing the potential of new technologies for our entire network.”
At the DACHSER Enterprise Lab in Dortmund, Dachser’s logistics specialists have been working closely with Fraunhofer researchers since 2017 to develop innovative digital solutions for use in Dachser’s groupage network and across the entire supply chain. One result of this collaboration at the DACHSER Enterprise Lab is the @ILO digital twin for groupage handling, which received the German Logistics Award from the German Logistics Association (BVL) in 2023 and the European Logistics Association (ELA) Award at the start of 2026. By the end of 2026, @ILO will already have been implemented at 14 of the logistics provider’s locations in Europe.
Prof. Alice Kirchheim, Director of Fraunhofer IML, comments: “We’re pleased that the partnership is being extended once again. @ILO has impressively demonstrated what we can achieve together—and we will continue to do so in the future.”
“In the field of artificial intelligence in particular, the onus is on companies to translate the current state of the art into practical solutions,” adds Prof. Stefan Wrobel, Director of Fraunhofer IAIS. “Dachser is doing this systematically as part of its Enterprise Lab to ensure the long-term competitiveness of its business model.”
