Virtual reality (VR) technology is gaining popularity. It is to be made usable for intralogistics as a future technology. Fraunhofer IML has extensive experience in digital planning, particularly with 3-dimensional virtual images of reality. Planned intralogistics systems can be virtually walked through to eliminate potential issues as early as the planning stage.

In VR environment, processes and workplaces can be designed and tested. Optimization is done in terms of evaluation parameters like performance or physical and cognitive ergonomics. It is possible to connect with motion-capture suits. Virtually designed workplaces and processes can be transferred into an employee training environment. Employees can be trained in a motivating way and immersive manner on the PC, in VR, or on mobile devices by embedding them in a game concept. Error situations can be simulated, and solutions communicated, making a lengthy training phase in the real workplace unnecessary.

There is a pool of experience and a library of 3D objects that can be accessed because of the completion of numerous projects in the field of virtual planning, as well as the development of serious games for the training of logistical processes.
