NB-IoT Level Sensor
In cooperation with Rhenus SE & Co. KG and T-Systems International GmbH, the Fraunhofer-Institute for Material Flow and Logistics IML developed a sensor to record the filling levels of different containers, such as file bins and glass containers. The 5G-compatible radio network NarrowBand-IoT (NB-IoT) enables the use of this detection technology and is regarded as a pioneer of the Internet of Things (IoT). The battery-powered level sensor sends event-driven data to the cloud for up to eight years. This ensures efficient and central control of container management. The sensor registers defined and individually adjustable filling levels of the containers and ensures that only full containers are picked up. With the help of this cost-effective and durable technology it is ensured that uneconomical journeys can be avoided in the future. Furthermore, resources can be saved and the environmental impact can be greatly reduced through less fine dust and emissions. With a targeted price of about 30 euros, the sensor also represents a further application of an IoT-technology that is suitable for mass use.
