RAN – RFID-based Automotive Network RAN

The Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology (BMWi) is funding the research project "RAN - RFID-based Automotive Network" as part of a lighthouse project "Internet of Things". RAN’s objective is to develop new control concepts for networks of the automotive industry. In addition to the technical data linking of companies through an information broker concept - the projects aims to create process and communication standards so that the entire industry will profit. The starting point is the network-wide usage of RFID technology, which will be implemented at different points at the project partner businesses.

Project partners are automotive manufacturers, suppliers, IT and software providers, technology suppliers and scientific institutions. Among the industrial companies are the enterprises Daimler, BMW, Bosch, DHL, IBM, SAP and Siemens. The full presentation of the consortium is available on the following website.

The tasks of the Fraunhofer IML include the process and data standardization and the development of logistics assistance systems. The department Enterprise Planning mainly supports the process mappings in the functional areas production and logistics. The results are prerequisite for the development of standards and further innovations. The team members work closely with the department Supply Chain Engineering.

Determination of system load components and boundaries in robust distribution systems

The objective of the research project is the investigation of system loads in distribution systems and the derivation of an extended, multi-dimensional system load comprehension. The project funded by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Labour (BMWA) and the Federation of Industrial Research Associations "Otto von Guericke" e.V. (AiF), concentrates on the examination of decentral functional areas of distribution systems. Workload limits are investigated, workloads are described precisely and central characteristics are analyzed.

The research project is supported by two strong industry partners, the parcel service DPD and the cable system service provider TKD. The research activities are carried out in close cooperation with these partners so that the investigations are completed with strong focus on application in operative business. The scientific research results will be directly transferred in business operations of the industry partners.

»Applied research is not an end in itself. Rather, research has to be aligned to current logistical problems and must produce new innovative concepts, which improve the competitiveness of companies in the long term. «
