Logistic on the pulse of science and technology

As a part of  the Fraunhofer Institute for Material Flow and Logistics we research and develop in the field of production logistics. Our focus is on market relevant logistic studies as well as on applied research projects.

Logistic Studies

To underline identified needs for research or to verify new solutions we interdisciplinary work out scientific studies. Research topics are arising from our diverse work for our industry clients as well as from latest socio-cultural key issues with impact on production and logistics.

Morgenstadt- On the way to the city of the future

How can the vision of Morgenstadt as a sustainable, livable future city look like? The Fraunhofer-Society has initiated a comprehensive and multidisciplinary process that aims at developing an holistic and scientifically validated future scenario. This process is a guiding example for a demand- and implementation-oriented research approach.

The vision »Morgenstadt« is based on seven core topics including the sector production and logistics which is leaded by the IML. The department production logistics is here focusing on the research questions how to create sustainable and adaptable production systems in urban area and how to realize production supply as well as distribution processes city-friendly.

Potentials of Industry 4.0 for Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises

The challenge for a company is to keep track of the newest Industry 4.0 technologies and methods. This applies in particular to small and medium-sized enterprises (SME) without any dedicated research department.

The agiplan GmbH, the Zenit GmbH and the Fraunhofer Institute for Material Flow and Logistics announced to combine their expertise and know-how in a joint project team that carries out a study named “Potentials of Industry 4.0 for Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises”. The first part of the joint study will give an overview of the ongoing state-funded research activities on Industry 4.0 in Germany and their addressed technologies.

The second part of the study addresses the question if SME will be disadvantaged by Industry 4.0 technology and how to help them to keep up with the technological development.

Therefore specific needs and problems of SME will be summarized in each field of application and matched with Industry 4.0 technologies to give recommendations for Politics, Industry and Science.

The study is funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) and is expected to be published by the end of April 2015.

Research Projects

The target of our scientific activities is the development of innovative solutions in production logistics in order to respond to future social challenges. We develop those solutions in a practice and scientific oriented manner in cooperation with further leading research institutes and renowned industrial companies. Our current research project are:

Energy efficiency in production and logistics

The energy efficiency in production and logistics project deals with the issue of how concepts of production planning and control can not only be evaluated in terms of logistics but also in target goals for energy.
