The Rack Picker - Machines and Facilities

The Regalpicker - Automatic collision picking in the high rack

The Fraunhofer Institute for Material Flow and Logistics (IML) is responsible for innovative conveying and storage systems for intralogistics.

An example is the modular regalpicker. An original idea, since pallet handling as well as the picking of piece goods are made possible with one device.

The Regalpicker is also equipped with a gripping technology for packs, the Traction Gripper, based on a traditional shelf unit with a classic unit for pallet handling. The gripper acts by the active use of friction forces and moves with the aid of a multi-axis telescopic arm into the individual shelf compartments of a high rack bearing. The articles picked there are delivered to a vertical conveyor in accordance with the cover belt principle and are transported continuously via a roller conveyor in the racking lane.

The picking on the shelf eliminates the need to move complete pallets and thus saves transport times, pre-zone areas and technology. In contrast to the classical two-dimensional picking, the economy of a decentralized delivery of pickled goods is also evident in high picking speeds.

The prototype of the Regalpickers combines Traction Gripper, deck conveyor and the warehouse management system myWMS. All components were developed by IML. Their interplay illustrates the know-how for the coordination of different elements of material flow systems.
